New Ross

New Ross in County Wexford is located close to Wexford town, 35 minutes drive, Waterford town is 24 minutes away on the N25, Enniscorthy, 31 minutes, Kilkenny 55 minutes on the M9, R910 and Carlow 1 hour M9 and R430, Kildare 1 hour 50 minutes on the M9, Rosslare Europort Ferry is just 45 minutes. New Ross is situated beside the River Barrow, the second largest river in Ireland, the first being the River Shannon.

New Ross town, with history dating back to the 6th century, was once a prosperous port, but with bigger ships being built, these were unable to dock in New Ross. New Ross Quays would have seen many immigrants leave Irish soil to start new lives in Britain, America and Australia during the 1800's, one of these being the 35th President of the USA, John F. Kennedys, great-grandfather, Patrick Kennedy. You can visit the Kennedy Homestead and the J.F.K Arboretum. Also in New Ross is a replica of the Dunbrody ship of 1845, initially built as a cargo ship for the merchant family Graves, but later it was fitted with bunks for people escaping the potatoe famine and heading to North America. Today there is a small marina in New Ross called the Three Sisters Marina in New Ross, the three sisters representing the Rivers Barrow, Nore, and the Suir.

If you can take time out and enjoy the drive which leads to Hook Head, in Wexford, just 24 miles from New Ross which is a beautiful scenic area of Hook Head, Fethard-On-Sea where you will find the much photographed Hook Lighthouse. Duncannon Fort near the Blue Flag Beach of Duncannon is a star shaped fortress, built as protection against the Spanish Armada, then it served as a prision, and now a Maritime Museum in Ducannon, Dunbrody Abbey is also well worth a visit founded in the 1100's is an example of a Cisercian Monastery, near by is Dunbrody Castle and Yew Maze Gardens, New Ross.
